Today marks the completion of uploading all of the gravestones I have taken pictures of at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Schenectady, New York. This has been a huge project and I hope that this information will be preserved so that future families, (particularly those of Polish and Eastern European descent who settled in Schenectady) will be able to use it in their search for their ancestry.
Adding gravestones to findagrave.org is a wonderful opportunity to devote time to voluntarily add information to an ever growing project. Ancestry.com even highlight’s matches now – an extremely helpful tool. Sometimes the only photograph we may be able to hold on to of our loved one is the memorial created in their honor.
In my opinion the next step would be to locate the obituaries for these individuals and transcribe them, which would add additional highly valuable information for researchers.
One must truly enjoy data entry in order to transcribe the information on local gravestones into the database. Should you decide to start a new hobby and wish to help others by adding gravestones from your area. I can assure you that your work will not got unnoticed.
